  1. A buoy, pronounced boy is a floating object
  2. used to mark channels for shipping or warn of
  3. hazards to navigation. Buoys come in 
  4. different shapes, such as a pole, cylinder,
  5. and cone. Light buoys carry a small tower 
  6. surmounted by a flashing lantern, and bell
  7. buoys house a bell, which rings as the buoy 
  8. moves up and down with the waves. Mooring 
  9. buoys are heavy and have a ring on top to 
  10. which a ship can be tied.
